The Oakland Indie Awards... And A New Shop Video!

You might have heard right here on this blog that Kerri Johnson, owner of Marion & Rose, was nominated for an Oakland Indie Award in the "Soul of Oakland" category! Here at the shop, we try to embody the entrepreneurial, do-it-yourself, creative, and community-oriented vibe that Oakland's known for, so we were really excited for Kerri to be nominated, especially since the other nominees are doing such inspiring work.

While we didn't take home the main award, one of our vendors, Juniper Ridge, won the Green Award, and Tina Tamale, our fabulous neighbor in Old Oakland, won the Oakland Pillar Award. And we do have something to share from the festivities – a fun little video about the shop. (Thanks to the ever-so-talented Joshua Farr "Fish" of The Volcano Club for lending us his videography skills.)

Oakland Soul - Kerri Johnson from The Volcano Club on Vimeo.

And boy, did we have fun at the awards! The Kaiser Rooftop Garden is such a beautiful green venue. Here are some of the things we saw:

Lots of vendors! We did a little shopping ourselves at the Indie Marketplace. The free food by Souley Vegan was a hit!

Lively performances.

Beautiful artists.

And just tons and tons of people!

You can bet we'll be saving the date for next year's event – we had a blast.

Meet the Ladies of Native State... This Saturday, a Shop Event!

Come out to the shop this weekend as we welcome the lovely ladies of Native State! The gals will be here in the flesh from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday (June 1) to share their full line of goodness.

Native State's beautiful salves, elixirs, tonics, and creams are some of the best smelling and deepest healing products around. Made by a wife a wife team in the foothills of Northern California, we like to think of their products as magical potions with moisturizing properties. All of their products are vegan, natural, cruelty-free, sustainable, and made with love.

The owners, Torre and Rachel Freeman, have a great story. After college, the duo found themselves moving around quite a bit, from town to town and cafe to cafe, trying to find themselves. They knew they wanted to be crafters, and they knew they wanted to make something together. Serendipitously, a friend offered to show them how to make lotions and salves. After one session, they were hooked, and emptied their savings accounts to buy herbs and supplies to launch an artisan body care line. The rest is history.

We hope to see you at the event! Just be sure to RSVP on Facebook so we have a sense of how many are coming.

Everyone who attends will be entered into a raffle for a gift basket of Native State products. All you have to do is show up to our event, snap a photo of something in the shop, tag it #marionandrose, and post it up on Instagram to be entered to win! Easy enough, eh?

A Homemade Summer Cocktail for a Sunny Three-Day Weekend

This recipe made it into our Facebook feed, and we couldn't resist sharing it with you all! With a sunny three-day weekend coming up, we hope you've reserved some time in your calendar for some inspired imbibing. Because it'd almost be a crime to turn down a lemon-infused summer cocktail on a warm day.

This recipe came to us courtesy of our friends in Brooklyn at W+P Design, who are also the inventors of a new item in our shop – the Mason Shaker. Not your ordinary cocktail shaker, it's inspired by the iconic Mason Jar and the designers' obsession with vintage kitchenware. After one too many mint juleps poured from a poorly-modified Mason Jar one summer, the idea for a better (and cooler) cocktail shaker hit them like a double shot of whiskey. After a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, the Mason Shaker was born.

Lucky for us, it's now for sale in our shop! You can purchase it in our online store or just pop on down to the shop to pick it up in person. At $34, it makes for the perfect housewarming gift for drink lovers.

Happy cocktailing!

For Your Garden... Ceramic Herb Garden Labels

We love these herb garden labels by Paulova Ceramics! What a good idea to create nice looking, sturdy labels for your herb pots that won't wash away or get buried in dirt. Each stake is handmade with clay, color coded with glaze, and hand printed with its herb name.

We carry a few of Paula Lopez-Otero's ceramics in the shop, and all of her wares are inspired by the simple beauty and functionality of Scandinavian design. She never formally studied art in school, but received an early education at the Waldorf School in Linz, Austria, where art is an integral part of curriculum and is treated as an important subject of study.

After many years of pursuing pottery in her free time, Paula is now making a living as a full time ceramics artist. While she just recently left the Bay Area for Portland, Oregon, we've got a nice selection of her things in the shop. Come see us and we'll show you her latest creations.

Five Years of Manifesto Bikes ... Come Party This Sunday

The happy hour bike party with the East Bay Bicycle Coalition last Thursday was tons o' fun! Everyone came out to Old Oakland in droves, and we were excited to be a part of the action. Thanks to those of you who were able to stop by our artist reception with Lisa Espenmiller and say hi. Here are some of our favorite pics from the evening:

Speaking of bikes, our good friends at Manifesto Bikes are throwing their 5 year anniversary party on Sunday from 12-7 p.m. You probably remember that Manifesto was one of the first shops to go into popuphood, and they've since moved on and remodeled their original 40th Street location.

We can't wait to celebrate with them! They'll be hosting Bike Church (one of their lively community gatherings) from 12-4 p.m. with Wade's Sodas and pizza from Hot Italian. Artist Ken Davis will be on hand to custom letter your bikes and helmets.

At 4 p.m. we'll all take a group ride over to the Night Light for an early evening after party with DJ Treat-U-Nice. There will also be a raffle benefitting Spokeland, and our shop donated one of the prizes, along with other local favorites like Oaklandish and ISSUES Magazine shop. The grand prize is an Oaklandish x Manifesto bike.

All of the fun event details are on Facebook. Hope to see you there!

Behind the Scenes with Artist Peter St.Lawrence

These speakeasy-esque flasks are one of our favorite items in the shop, and their creator, Peter St.Lawrence, is sort of a mad genius. Since getting his BFA in sculpture from CCA in 2001, he's been making his mark here in Oakland through designing restaurant interiors, founding FM gallery, and releasing his storied ceramics. We caught up with him to ask him about his artistic vision and to find out what projects he's currently working on.

How did you get into ceramics?
The craft of ceramics is one where the more you learn about it, the more you realize you don't know. Ceramics can be as simple as an ashtray or as advanced as the tiles that allows space shuttles to reenter the atmosphere. Anything is possible with clay if you have the patience to figure it out. I love the challenge and the satisfying nature of the materiality.

Your flasks that we carry in our shop have such a storied past. Can you elaborate?
I was inspired by a prohibition era whiskey bottle that someone dug up in the Oakland hills under what must have been a speakeasy. I wanted to cast that beautiful bottle back into the world and give that history a second life. Having hand-built flasks for many years, my craft has more recently crossed a threshold with the advent of slip-casting. Using a plaster mold and liquid clay allows me to make the flasks lighter and able to hold more liquid, and therefor more functional.

What other artistic endeavors are you up to these days?
Actually, I'm really excited about working on a ceramic jewelry line in collaboration with a friend of mine. I'm not ready to get too specific just yet. But I have been obsessed by the quality of the porcelain in the shapes I've been casting.

We heard you had a hand in the restaurant design for Duende in Oakland. Can you tell us about your vision?

"Duende" loosely means having soul, and is an extremely rich concept that guided our visual decisions. It is described as the difference between a technically proficient dance and one that is expressive and emotional. Because there is something inherently genuine about duende, we tried to only use materials that are being shown for what they are: rusted metal and burnt wood with touches of gold.

In literature, duende is not clearly a force of good or of evil: It's both. Therefor creating intentional areas of darkness and lightness with textured shadow play became a theme. We tried to reference history while staying true to chef Paul Canales' Spanish-inspired innovative cooking and love of contemporary music.

What's it like being an artist in Oakland, and how can local folks support you?

I am fortunate to be the member of an incredible community of artists at FM on 25th street. Our studio has a diverse line-up of talented artists that generate limitless inspiration and cross-pollination. We open our doors to the public every first Friday from 5-9 and EVERY Saturday from 1-5. Visiting FM is a great opportunity to find some hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind items while supporting local artists.

Put an Anchor on It!

Forget the expression, "put a bird on it." We prefer anchors! And aren't these new items from Hartstone Pottery darling? We love how they've taken the utilitarian mug, fashioned it out of the finest stoneware, and gussied it up with a sailing theme.

Hartstone has a pretty interesting backstory. They're located in Zaneville, Ohio, a river town founded in 1797 by pioneer farmers who saw an opportunity to make pottery because of the rich clay on the banks. For over 40 years, Hartstone has been continuing the pottery heritage of the region, and some of their employees come from a line of several generations of potters.

They're known for making beautiful, hand crafted ceramics that stand the test of time, and some of their designs from over the years are now collectible. Using the quality materials they find in their own backyard, their products are handmade out of vitrified stoneware clay, high-fired and hand painted. (And lucky for us, they are microwave and dishwasher safe.) We love supporting this time-honored craft by carrying this heirloom quality line in our shop!  Shop for these beauty's online here.

Time for a picnic! We've got Peterboro Baskets

Our baskets have arrived from Peterboro Basket Company, and my, are they beautiful. They make us want to grab a bottle of rose, forage some vittles, and spread out on the banks of Lake Merritt for a sunny picnic.

For more than 150 years, a family owned business in the heart of Peterborough, New Hampshire has been crafting these baskets, and they have it down to a science. We're happy to be helping them keep this New England tradition alive. We've got all shapes and sizes, like the large laundry basket, picnic basket, square waste basket, and storage basket. Come on down to the shop and check 'em out!
